What Is Line Shopping in Betting?

Line shopping means comparing the odds across sportsbooks and betting at the best available price. It's the simplest and most proven long-term edge in sports betting.

Why it works

Books price the same game differently, so the best available price is almost always better than any single book's. Taking that best number on every bet adds a little extra value each time — and over a season, small differences compound into a large one. It's a free edge that requires no handicapping skill.

How much it's worth

Consistently getting even 1–2% better prices can be the difference between a losing and a winning bettor. Studies of sharp bettors show CLV — beating the closing line — is largely a byproduct of disciplined line shopping.

Example

One book has a team at 1.90, another at 2.05. Betting the 2.05 pays 15 cents more per dollar for the exact same bet. Do that across hundreds of bets and the gap is enormous.

FAQ

Do I need accounts at many books?

More books means more chances at the best price. Even comparing five major books catches most of the value; an odds tool shows them side by side.

Is line shopping legal?

Completely — you're just choosing where to bet. It's the most accessible edge there is.
